Announcing the Ocean City Nor'easters and Oaklyn United FC Partnership

Today, the Ocean City Nor'easters and Oaklyn United FC are announcing a partnership between the clubs that sees Oaklyn become an official development team for the Nor'easters.

The Nor'easters are one of the winningest and most storied clubs in American grassroots soccer history. Founded in 1996 under the leadership of President Giancarlo Granese, Sr., the Storm count more than 110 professional players in their alumni ranks including 33 MLS draft picks. Currently competing in USL League Two (the fourth tier of the US pyramid) they remain a divisional powerhouse, winning the Mid-Atlantic title in 2022 with an undefeated 11-0-3 record. They boast the fifth-most wins in the history of the league.

Oaklyn United FC is a grassroots community soccer club based in Camden County, New Jersey with a player footprint that spans the greater Philadelphia area. Founded in 2018 as a recreational team, the club has become the area's fastest growing lower-league organization and now competes at the elite amateur level in the Eastern Premier Soccer League. The EPSL is a USASA-sanctioned amateur “super league” that features teams from feeder leagues in New England all the way down to Virginia. Clubs that finish top of the EPSL can optionally promote into the fully professional National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) system.

As part of the new partnership agreement, Oaklyn United’s EPSL team will serve as a place for promising young players to build their skillset and match readiness under the guidance of premium coaches including Nor'easters head coach Matt Perrella and assistant coach Cam Christine, who will take up those same titles with Oaklyn. OUFC founder Alex Lewis will remain manager of the EPSL team.

The new set-up is already paying dividends. Just last week, Perrella led the Nor'easters to a statement victory over perennial powerhouse West Chester United in the first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Included in Ocean City's match day roster were several players who also feature weekly in Oaklyn's EPSL team. The Storm next face the Maryland Bobcats, a professional team competing in NISA, in Round 2.

Leaders at both organizations noted the possibilities this partnership creates for players who reside in the population-dense Philadelphia metro area to reach higher levels of the sport via the Oaklyn-Nor'easters development pipeline.

"The Nor'easters are the most prominent and successful pre-professional club in New Jersey; players deserve access to our brand and the opportunity to showcase themselves,” said Perrella. “Youth clubs in New Jersey should feel confident that their best players have a great club to head to next with a track record of proven success in getting players into the professional ranks.”

"We're incredibly proud to make this partnership official, and even more grateful to Giancarlo, Matt, and everyone at the Nor'easters," said Lewis. "We've always wanted Oaklyn to become the 'bridge' to the elite level for players from a wide range of backgrounds. Thanks to this partnership, it's mission accomplished."

Supporters can catch Oaklyn United in action during the Spring half of the EPSL season, and the Nor'easters during their US Open Cup run and again when USL-2 resumes in late May. Visit www.oceancityfc.com and www.oaklynunitedfc.com for more.

Promoted: OUFC Wins CASA Segunda Division, Advances To Top Flight

With a 1-1 draw on the final day of the season enough to secure top spot, Oaklyn United FC’s CASA first team won the Segunda Division championship and automatic promotion to Primera.

An up-and-down season saw the Lions turn in some overwhelming performances as well as some disappointing individual matches. But persistence was the name of the game, with OUFC prevailing at crucial moments while rivals faltered.

In addition to another trophy in the cabinet, the victory delivers automatic promotion to Primera, the top flight of the CASA Soccer League system. It is the first time OUFC has occupied a spot in the top flight since joining the league in the fourth division in 2018.

Congrats you Lions!

Oaklyn United Goes Semi-Pro, Joins Eastern Premier Soccer League

Oaklyn United FC announced on Tuesday that they will be entering an expansion team into the Eastern Premier Soccer League, a regional competition that occupies the 5th tier of the American league system.

The EPSL features a promotion/relegation system that links top regional feeder leagues from several states on the east coast with the fully professional National Independent Soccer Association (NISA). Through EPSL, clubs can promote all the way up to the 3rd tier as they grow.

"Joining the EPSL is a crucial next step for our club," said OUFC President Alex Lewis. "We've been on an incredible path of growth since deciding to expand from an informal team to a true community club a few years ago, and we know how much talent often goes overlooked in South Jersey. We view this new squad as a chance to provide competitive football to an even wider and more diverse base of top-notch players."

OUFC’s entry into the EPSL will be an addition to its current team structure, rather than a replacement of any existing teams. Oaklyn’s current first team will continue to play in the CASA Soccer League, an unaffiliated regional league based in Philadelphia, where it recently won promotion to the Segunda Division. The reserve team, Oaklyn United Pride, plays in CASA’s Quinto division.

The new team, to be known internally as Oaklyn United Pro/Del, is designed to be a development and pre-professional team for younger and more competitive players who can commit to a more rigorous training and travel schedule.

“One of the cores of our mission has always been to provide a route to the highest level of the games for players who didn’t go through the ‘regular channels’ of college ball or elite clubs, in addition to those who have,” Lewis said. “Focusing on a younger group of talent, while incorporating some senior players who will play double-duty between CASA and the EPSL, really allows us to shine a light on good players who might otherwise go overlooked.”

The new league comes with an increased administrative burden, as the semi-pro status conveys requirements in coaching licenses, facilities, and overhead that amateur leagues typically don’t require. But Lewis is certain that OUFC is up to the task.

“Expanding into the EPSL is a huge step, but it’s just one part of our growth plan. We’re submitting our application to achieve official non-profit incorporation status, and we hope to be announcing even more ways for players, coaches, and staff to get involved at the grassroots level.

“We owe a huge debt of thanks to Bill Marth at EPSL, as well as Aaron Sexton at Danubia SC and Jim Breslin at Kensington for helping to make this league happen for the entire conference.”

The Lions’ new Pro/Del team will begin play in the EPSL’s Delaware River conference starting in the Spring of 2022.

OUFC Joins Philly Falcons to Oppose LGBTQ+ Discrimination in Soccer

The two clubs joined forces to hold a preseason friendly in support of the Football V Homophobia campaign.

This past Saturday, OUFC’s first team took on Philly Falcon’s Rainbow Battalion in a preseason friendly match to take a stand against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in soccer and everywhere.

The Lions were invited to join in the friendly by Falcons after winning the organization’s Rainbow Award for philanthropy during last year’s Kicking Out Transphobia tournament, also organized by Falcons and CASA Soccer. OUFC players, staff and supporters raised more than $3,000 for the Morris Home during the tournament.

It may have been a cold and rainy morning at Bryn Athyn college, but that didn’t stop the two sides from enjoying a fun and competitive match. The friendly was organized during FvH’s month of action, where clubs from the grassroots level all the way up to professionals are encouraged to hold events declaring their support for players of all backgrounds.

OUFC also sponsored a sale of commemorative warm-up shirts which players from both teams wore before the match. All proceeds from the sale of the shirts go directly to FvH.

FvH is an international organization founded in the UK. It has received support from footballing superstars like Jess Fishlock, Son Heung-Min, and Peter Gulasci.
